Parker Earns Top KC Honor
Kansas City - University of Nebraska men's basketball signee Benny Parker was honored Thursday night, as he was selected as the 2012 recipient of The DiRenna Award, signifying the top player in the Kansas City Metro area.
Parker, who signed with Nebraska last November, averaged 24.8 points, 6.2 assists and 3.9 steals per game as a senior, helping his Sumner Academy team to a 19-4 record this season. During his career, he led Sumner Academy to a pair of Class 4A state titles while helping his teams to an 85-15 mark over the last four years.
"When they called my name, I was shocked," Parker told the Kansas City Star on Thursday. "It means a lot, because this was a good group of players and for me to be picked out of all of them means a lot to me. "It means I accomplished something great in high school. This is a great way to cap off my high school career."
Parker was one of two Husker recruits among the five finalists this season, joining Olathe Northwest's Shavon Shields. The pair will team up on Friday night in the HyVee/Pepsi Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Challenge at Shawnee Mission South High School, as the contest features the best high school seniors from Kansas and Missouri.
