Huskers Top Doane, 76-54 in Exhibition

Brandon Ubel and Dylan Talley had 12 points apiece, leading a balanced Nebraska attack over Doane College, 76-54, in an exhibition game Monday night at the Devaney Center.

Ubel led the Huskers with 12 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots from the floor, and grabbed eight rebounds, as the Huskers shot 53 percent and enjoyed a 48-24 advantage on the glass, Talley came off the bench for 12 points and had six rebounds in 18 minutes of action, as six players had at least eight points and 11 Huskers broke into the scoring column.

Nebraska took control early, jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first 3:50 of the game, as seniors Caleb Walker and Brandon Richardson combined for seven quick points for the Big Red. The Huskers were in control and built a 10-point lead at 28-18 before Bo Spencer keyed a decisive run that gave the Big Red a 20-point halftime lead.

Spencer, who finished with nine points, four assists and four rebounds in his first game as a Husker, had five points, including a 3-pointer, in a 10-0 surge over the final 4:48 of the half to stake Nebraska to a 38-18 halftime margin.

Doane got back into the game with some long-range shooting, hitting 8-of-13 from 3-point range after the break to whittle NU's 20-point lead to 52-43 with 10:55 remaining. That would be as close as the Tigers would get, as baskets by Ubel and Christopher Niemann started a 12-0 spurt for Nebraska to make it 64-43 after a Talley jumper with 6:56 remaining

Nick Reed led Doane with a game-high 13 points, while Joshua Riser had 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers

Head Coach Doc Sadler
Opening Statement
"As I told the team, it's so good to get started. We had the one scrimmage, obviously, but to get out in front of a crowd - it's a whole different experience. I thought our guys looked really, really tired. We just looked tired out there. I don't think I've ever had a team that's had 28 turnovers in a ballgame. I'm not saying that they (Doane) weren't playing good defense, but it wasn't like it was a pressurized defense that was causing those turnovers. It was extreme carelessness on our behalf.  I told  the guys after the game, we didn't have to be a good team tonight because it was an exhibition game, but the good news is, as I hope they understand, those turnovers have to be down to 10 or 12, and I think they will understand that."

On their 3-point shooting
"I was disappointed in our 3-point shooting. That's something that we have to do a much better job at. To get outscored 30-12, and as I told the team there, you give up 25 three-point attempt, and then also allow the ball to get into the lane 31 times, your defense isn't very good. We've got a lot of things to work on, but so does everybody else.

On Christopher Neimann's playing time
"I was very happy with the minutes Christopher Neimann gave us. It was a little bit more than I thought. I hope he can give us 10 to 12 minutes, and that's what he gave us, and they were productive."

Bo Spencer
On how I felt to get back out on the court

"I was telling Doc on the way over that I had my jitters. I felt happy to be back out there. It was just so much adrenalin pumping and so much stuff. It's been two years since I've played. I was happy. I know I was trying.  We didn't take good care of the ball. I think everybody had first-game jitters. Everybody wanted to show that we have been putting in so much work. Give all the credit to Doane. They came out and played tough, they shot the ball really well. A lot of it was that we were beating ourselves with the turnovers. I think it was just us being so happy to be playing after having hard practices. I really think that's what it was. As far as for me, I was really happy to be back out there. I think I was a little bit more anxious on my jump shot and my shots and stuff just because I was so happy to be back out there. It's going to change."
