Weatherholt Wins NCAA Opener
Urbana, Ill. - Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 38 Aleksandra Josifoska in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center Wednesday.
Weatherholt, a senior from Prairie Village, Kan., notched a straight-set victory over Josifoska for the second time in NCAA Tournament play this season, after defeating UNLV's top singles player 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the NCAA Team Championships at the NU Varsity Tennis Courts on May 11.
Weatherholt, who is ranked No. 11 nationally by the ITA, and seeded 9-16 in the NCAA Singles Championship, improved to 26-1 on the year in singles play. It was her school-record 119th career singles victory and pushed her combined career victory total to 202. She advances to Thursday's second round to face No. 43 Klara Fabikova, who defeated North Carolina's No. 39 Whitney Kay, 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday. Weatherholt is scheduled to take on Fabikova at 8 a.m.
A win for the All-American Weatherholt in the second round would make her the first Husker in history to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Singles Championship. Live scoring will be available at the NCAA Tournament Central page at www.fightingillini.com.
Weatherholt also will be competing in doubles action in the round of 32 on Thursday with partner Patricia Veresova. The third-seeded Huskers will face Georgia State's Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah at a time yet to be determined on Thursday. It will not be played before 1:30 p.m.
