Lincoln, Neb. --- A total of seven student-athletes from the Nebraska wrestling program were honored by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday, March 28, when they were named to the Academic All-Big Ten squad for their work in the classroom. The seven Huskers were part of 48 Academic All-Big Ten award winners from Nebraska and total of 615 from around the Big Ten.
Redshirt freshman Skylar Galloway, junior Ross Grande, junior Josh Ihnen, senior Tucker Lane, sophomore Shawn Nagel, senior James Nakashima and redshirt freshman John Svoboda were all honored by the Big Ten. To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must have been a letterwinner who are in at least their second year of competition and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Lane leads the way for the Huskers, as he is one of only three Big Ten winter athletes to carry a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Lane was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 member, earning first-team honors in 2010 and 2011 and was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American last year.
Ihnen, who was also a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 member, was named to the team after earning his degree in finance in December of 2011. The three-time NCAA qualifier is a two-time member of the NWCA All-Academic team.
Grande, Nakashima and Svoboda were all named to their second academic all-conference team, while Galloway and Nagel earned their first honor.
