Huskers Sweep Big Ten Weekly Awards
The No. 6 Nebraska women's gymnastics team swept both weekly conference awards on Monday, when the honors were announced by the Big Ten. Sophomore Jamie Schleppenbach earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the first time, while freshman Jessie DeZiel won her eighth Freshman of the Week award. It is the second time this season the Huskers have captured both awards after receiving both on Jan. 16.
Schleppenbach had the best meet of her Husker career in NU's road victory over No. 7 Utah on Friday, March 9. Schleppenbach set career bests on all four events en route to winning the all-around with a career-high 39.575. The Lincoln, Neb., native took home the vault (9.95) and beam (9.90) titles, while finishing fifth on bars (9.875) and 10th on floor (9.85). Schleppenbach had a clutch beam performance, posting a 9.90 in the Huskers' final spot to secure the victory.
DeZiel won her second consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Week award after finishing in top five of every event and recording a second-place finish in the all-around with a score of 39.55. The Rogers, Minn., native scored a career-high 9.95 on floor to win the event and took fifth on the beam (9.85), bars (9.875) and vault (9.875).
Both Husker gymnasts helped NU post a season-high score of 197.600, which was also the sixth-highest score in school history and the second-highest away meet score. The victory for the Huskers was the first over Utah in Salt Lake City since 1999.
The Huskers return to action this Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m. against the Iowa State Cyclones in their final regular season dual of the season at the Devaney Center. Continue to check back to Huskers.com for more updates on the Nebraska women's gymnastics team.
