Track and Field Season Set to Start Next Weekend
The 2013 track and field season is right around the corner as the Huskers open the indoor slate next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, with the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.
Head Coach Gary Pepin, who is in his 33rd year at the helm of the program, is set to lead the Huskers into another successful year.
Based on last year's results, the Huskers return an NCAA Champion, six All-Americans and five Big Ten Conference Champions. On the women's side, the Huskers will look to defend their 2012 Big Ten Indoor title.
The team's list of returning All-Americans includes Chad Wright, Bobby Carter, Bjorn Barrefors, Mara Weekes, Jessica Furlan, Ellie Grooters, Morgan Wilken and Mara Griva. Wright is the defending NCAA champion in the discus, while Barrefors is the defending Big Ten champion and school record holder in the decathlon. The Huskers will also benefit from the return of a full roster and the addition of numerous newcomers including 2012 London Olympics participant Janis Leitis.
The Huskers return three out of four members of the women's indoor distance medley relay team that finished seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships and broke the Nebraska school record. NU also returns Big Ten 400-meter hurdle champion Miles Ukaoma, Big Ten outdoor triple jump champion Anna Weigandt, Big Ten indoor triple jump champion Mara Griva and Big Ten outdoor high jump champion Marusa Cernjul. In addition, the Huskers return all four members of the 4x100 meter relay team- John Welk, Dexter McKenzie, Bobby Carter and Tim Thompson- that finished with honorable mention All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Nebraska will host six home meets during the 2013 indoor season before traveling to the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 22-23 in Geneva, Ohio. The Huskers will then look to compete at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas on March 8-9.
During the outdoor season NU will compete at home three times, including the Nebraska Quad on April 13, the Pre-Drake Meet on April 24 and the Nebraska Invitational on May 4. The outdoor postseason begins with the 2013 Big Ten Championships on May 10-12 in Columbus, Ohio. The Huskers will then compete May 23-25 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. The 2013 collegiate season will conclude June 5-8 with a trip to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships.
