Huskers Qualify 18 for NCAA Championships

Austin, Texas – The Nebraska track and field team wrapped-up competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday. The Huskers added five more qualifiers on the day and are set to have 18 total bids at the NCAA Championships in Eugene in two weeks.

Mara Griva earned her second berth to the 2013 Championships, adding the triple jump to her schedules. She posted a leap of 42-9 (13.03) on her second attempt of the event and was able to hold on through the final round to earn a chance to compete for a national title.

Maggie Malone added her name to the list of Huskers competing at Hayward Field, advancing in the women’s javelin. She posted a throw of 162-6 (49.52) on her second attempt and was able to hold on through the final round to advance to Eugene. Annie Jackson just missed qualifying in the women’s shot put, finishing 13th with a throw of 52-11 ½ (16.14).

Dexter McKenzie also advanced on time in the men’s 200 meters, posting a season-best-tying clip of 21.03. Ricco Hall just missed advancing as he recorded a time of 21.11.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of John Welk, McKenzie, Hall and Tim Thompson also qualified for the NCAA Championships, finishing with a season-best time of 39.59 to come in second in their heat.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team ended the day by also advancing to the NCAA Championships. The team of Levi Gipson, Christian Sanderfer, Miles Ukaoma and Cody Rush advanced on time with a clip of 3:06.22.

The Huskers will head back to Lincoln as preparations continue for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The meet is scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 5 and will run through Saturday, June 8.
