Lawrence, Kan. – The action at the Kansas Relays picked up on Thursday as the decathlon competition was completed and both field and track events got underway. Guy Fenske and Will Lohman led the Huskers on the day, securing victories in the decathlon and hammer throw, respectively.
Fenske provided the early highlights as he held onto his first-place standing in the decathlon to secure the 2014 Kansas Relays title with 6,603 points. He started the day with a personal-best time of 18.04 in the 110-mter hurdles, followed by a throw of 111-4 (33.95) in the discus. He then cleared 12-7 ½ (3.85) in the pole vault before a throw of 167-5 (51.03) in the javelin. Fenske finished the day with a time of 4:37.81 in the 1,500 meters.
Lohman also earned a championship on Thursday, finishing first in the men’s hammer throw. Lohman tallied a mark of 201-3 (61.35) on his second attempt to hold on to first place. On the women’s side, Carlie Pinkelman notched a runner-up finish with a personal-best throw of 183-3 (55.87). Tristen Sharp was fourth with a throw of 180-11 (55.15).
Taking to the track, Kristi Oslund posted a win in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase collegiate unseeded section, recording a time of 11:18.88. Nolan Border tallied a fifth-place finish in the men’s 800 meters. He posted a time of 1:54.81. Sarah Larson came in fifth in the 10,000 meters collegiate unseeded section with a time of 37:23.21.
