La Jolla, Calif. - While the rest of the Huskers took part in the Drake Relays, a select group of Nebraska throwers participated in the Triton Invitational hosted by UC-San Diego.
Sophomore Will Lohman capped an impressive day for the Huskers with a seventh-place showing in the invitational field of the shot put. Lohman recorded a personal-best distance of 62-8 1/2 (19.11) to claim the top spot in the first flight. The mark is the best of any NU thrower this season and is the seventh-best mark in NU history.
Lohman began the day with a seventh-place finish after a personal-best distance of 204-9 (62.41) in the hammer throw competition to capture the No. 5 all-time mark in Nebraska history. Lohman, who ranked seventh in the conference standings entering the week, looks to jump up a spot in the Big Ten after his Saturday showing.
Senior captain Chad Wright continued to excel in the discus en route to a fifth-place finish with a distance of 206-10 (63.04). Wright still holds the second spot in the national discus standings. Wright also battled in the shot put where he took 12th place with a mark of 60 1/2 (18.30) after finishing ninth in his flight.
The Huskers featured a trio of women in the shot put at the Triton Invite. Senior Veronica Grizzle earned a fifth place showing in the open shot put field after a toss of 50-6 ¼ (15.40). Senior captain Annie Jackson took sixth in her flight, 14th place overall, after a distance of 50-2 (15.29) in the invitational portion of the shot put, while junior Carlie Pinkelman followed in 15th at 49-5 ½ also in the invite field.
