Lincoln – Creighton scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to break a 3-all tie, as the Bluejays downed No. 16 Nebraska, 6-4, in front of 5,745 at Hawks Field Tuesday evening.

Nebraska, which drops to 26-10, overcame a 3-1 deficit on Curtis Ledbetter’s two-run double in the fifth, but Creighton (20-14) regained momentum by scoring twice in the sixth and adding an insurance run in the seventh after Nebraska closed to with 5-4 on Colin Shockey’s RBI double.

"The biggest thing is we always talk about the ebbs and flow of the game, and when we score, it is so important to go out the next inning and put a goose egg up," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "That's how we win baseball games at Nebraska. If you look at the scoreboard tonight, every inning we scored, they came back and answered. I think that is the biggest thing of the entire night. You have to give them a lot of credit."

Jon Gorden (1-0) earned the win in relief for Creighton, which used six pitchers, while Bluejay ace Steve Grasley earned his first save with a scoreless ninth. CU, which won in Lincoln for the first time since 2001, used homers by Zach Daeges and Dave Schultz to break a six-game losing streak to the Huskers dating back to the 2002 season.

Ledbetter extended his hit streak to 14 games and drove in two runs, while Shockey, Alex Gordon and Jake Mullinax all had two hits apiece in a losing effort.

Gordon spotted the Huskers a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, scoring Daniel Bruce, who ripped a one-out double to right center.

The Bluejays came right back, scoring single runs in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead. Zach Daeges tied the score with a solo homer to lead off the second off of NU starter Brad Furnish. In the third, CU used a two-out double by Brad Dutton and a pair of walks to load the bases before plating a run on a passed ball by NU catcher Chad Steele. Schultz then led off the fourth with a solo homer to give the visitors a two-run cushion.

Nebraska came back to tie the score at three in the fifth on Ledbetter’s two-run double. Shockey opened the frame with a walk before Bruce bunted Shockey into scoring position. After an intentional walk to Gordon, one of two on the evening for the Husker third baseman, Ledbetter doubled to the wall in center, scoring both Shockey and Gordon.

Creighton took the lead for good in the sixth, scoring twice of NU reliever Tim Schoeninger, who dropped to 3-2 by allowing three runs in 2.2 innings of relief. With one out, Matt Hammer was hit by a pitch before Dan Norquist’s double put runners at second and third. Jon Klausing then came into the game and uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Hammer before Matt Daeges’ safety squeeze scored Norquist with the Bluejays’ fifth run.

The Huskers had a golden opportunity in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with no outs, but could only manage one run. Pinch hitter Braden Keith led off the inning with a walk before Jesse Boyer’s single was misplayed for an error, putting both runners in scoring position. Shockey then doubled to center, scoring Keith to cut the CU lead to 6-5. NU eventually loaded the bases with two outs, but Brandon Bird, who tossed three innings of one-hit relief, got Ledbetter to ground into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.

CU added an insurance run in the seventh as Schultz singled home Dutton, who coaxed a leadoff walk and stole second before scoring his second run of the night.

The Huskers now travel to top-ranked Texas for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:15 p.m. All three games will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, while Saturday’s contest will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Net.
