Lincoln Jon Klausing allowed two runs over six-plus innings to earn his first collegiate win, as No. 23 Nebraska downed Northern Iowa, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Klausing (1-0) scattered five hits and struck out a career-high five Panthers, as the freshman from Arvada, Colo., surrendered only one run in his first six innings before yielding a solo homer to Ryan Norman to lead off the seventh. Klausing’s outing, his second-longest start of the year, helped the Huskers (33-16) to their third straight victory.

Wednesday’s outing marked the second straight solid outing by a Husker freshman, as Brad Furnish went the first 5.2 innings in Tuesday’s 15-6 win.

"It is good to see the freshman doing what they're doing," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "These are games we need to win, but they are developmental games, too. It was not a great day offensively, but it was good enough to win."

The Huskers, playing their fifth game in five days, managed just five hits off three Panther pitchers, but received solo homers from Alex Gordon and Jake Mullinax, who also scored twice in the victory.

Nebraska got on the board in the second after Mullinax was hit by a pitch and John Grose doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs. UNI starter Bill Zenk uncorked a wild pitch to score Mullinax, while Colin Shockey made it 2-0 with an RBI single to right center. Gordon extended the Husker lead to 3-0 one inning later with his team-leading 16th homer of the year, a solo shot to right center.

Norman, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, put the Panthers within 3-1 in the fourth with a two-out single to score Sean LaCoste, who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. LaCoste, who also had a pair of hits, and Norman combined for four of UNI’s seven hits, as the Panthers dipped to 20-27 with the loss.

The Huskers added a fourth run off Zenk in the seventh, loading the bases on two walks and and a hit-by-pitch before John Grose grounded out to short, scoring Gordon on the play.

Zenk (4-3) pitched well in defeat, allowing four runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking three.

After Norman’s solo homer to lead off the seventh chased Klausing and put UNI within 4-2, a trio of Husker relievers held Northern Iowa scoreless the final two frames. Mike Sillman recoded the final two outs for his team-leading fifth save of the season.

Mullinax gave the Huskers some breathing room in the eighth with a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season, off Spencer Black.

The Huskers return to Big 12 action this weekend, as they travel to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Friday and all three games will be available on the Pinnacle Sports Network and on Huskers.com. In addition, all three games will be video-streamed on HuskersNside.
