Tyson Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

The 22nd-ranked Nebraska softball team picked up another Big Ten weekly honor on Monday, when the conference selected Dawna Tyson as its freshman of the week.

Tyson's selection marked the second straight week and third time this season that a Husker earned Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week honors. Previously, Emily Lockman earned the award on Feb. 18 and March 4. Tyson and Lockman both played their club ball for the Corona Angels, coached by Dawna's father, Marty.

A native of Corona, Calif., Tyson was honored following an outstanding performance in game two of a doubleheader at Wichita State on Saturday. Tyson reached base in all three of her plate appearances against the Shockers, finishing 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch. She homered for her third consecutive game and produced three RBIs and two runs scored. Tyson established a new career high with two runs scored against Wichita State, while tying her career high with two hits, one home run and three RBIs.

Tyson and her Husker teammates will open their home season on Friday against New Mexico State. Nebraska was scheduled to travel to UNO on Tuesday, but that game has been rescheduled for March 26.
