Through the Eyes of a Coach: March 3
The tale of the tape after the first four weeks is one of improving and competing...AND doing both simultaneously. Only great opponents help us reveal the best and the least in us, and we are grateful that eight of our 18 games have been against teams ranked in the top 15. We always say it is a game of inches, and that is true in the growth of a team as well. This last week was a growth spurt for our team as we improved on and off the field and competed better on the field and in the dugout.
Every season presents a new opportunity to form and define "who are we now", and the 2014 RED TEAM is on its way to putting its signature on this program. Being 75 percent underclassmen, the "elders" of the team called a players-only meeting last week. It was a great act of leadership on their part, and it solidified and synched up our actions to our mission. The best teams have great leadership from the locker room and eager followers...this team is growing into that nicely.
We just returned from Oklahoma where we came back 3-1, losing only once to defending National Champion Oklahoma on a walk-off single. We rebounded and defeated the Sooners 7-2 in the nightcap with a gritty competitive spirit as we battled pitch for pitch all game. On Friday, we swept a good Oklahoma State squad. We set the tone early in inning one by scoring and never relinquished the lead the entire doubleheader. We are improving and we are competing with a more fierce competitive edge as we enter March 2014. Buckle in Husker fans...we plan to keep on fighting.#StirItUp,
