Senior Taylor Edwards earned her first weekly award of the 2014 season on Monday, when she was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week. Edwards was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time in her career, and she also earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors as a freshman in 2011.
Edwards joins her twin sister Tatum and sophomore Hailey Decker as Nebraska’s three player-of-the-week honorees this season. Sophomore right-hander Emily Lockman has also been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week twice this spring, while MJ Knighten has been recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice.
A native of Murrieta, Calif., Edwards went 4-for-7 with five runs scored and four RBIs in Nebraska’s three-game sweep of Ohio State last weekend. Three of Edwards’ four hits went for extra-bases, including a pair of home runs, as she slugged 1.571 in the series. She also drew four walks in the three games and was hit by one pitch, helping her post a .750 on-base percentage.
Edwards went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and two runs scored in game one of the series before enjoying a productive doubleheader the next day. Edwards went 3-for-4 with one double, two homers, three walks, one hit-by-pitch, three RBIs and three runs scored in the doubleheader. She led off game one of the doubleheader with her 50th career home run, becoming just the second Husker to reach that mark. She also opened the scoring in game two with her Big Ten-leading 15th homer of the season.
Edwards and her Husker teammates will put a season-high seven-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday, when Nebraska travels to Omaha to take on the Creighton Bluejays at 6 p.m.
