By NU Athletic Communications

Palm Desert, Calif. – Senior Mike Siwa led the Nebraska men’s golf team on Friday by firing 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club.

As a team, the Huskers shot 291 on the par-72, 7,305-yard layout and trail tournament leader Colorado by 19 strokes. Nebraska is tied for 11th with Iowa State and Kansas State.

Siwa recorded his third subpar round of the season after posting a 1-1 mark at last weekend’s Big Ten Match Play Championship. The Omaha, Neb., native tied his lowest round of the season, which he shot twice during the fall.

Fellow senior Matt Record managed an even-par 72 at The Classic Club on Friday. The score is Record’s best of the season, bettering a 73 at the Firestone Invitational during the fall season. He is tied for 33rd heading into the final two rounds.

Junior Ross Dickson is tied for 50th after his first-round 73 on Friday. Dickson is the lone Husker to appear in every tournament this season after a 74.20 stroke average in the fall.

Calvin Freeman carded 75 in the opening round, while Justin Jennings posted 78. Freeman, a junior from Table Rock, Neb., is tied for 73rd.

Colorado’s Yannik Paul leads the individual race after the first round with his 6-under-par 66. Oregon’s Thomas Lim is one stroke back, while five golfers are tied for third after firing 68.

The second round commences on Saturday at 9:10 a.m. CT. The Huskers tee off on Hole No. 1 and will play alongside Iowa State, UC Santa Barbara and Loyola Marymount. The Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate ends on Sunday.
