Huskers Look to Continue Momentum in Iowa

Three weeks after its best outing of the season, the Nebraska men’s golf team travels to Iowa City, Iowa over the weekend for the Great River Entertainment Hawkeye Invitational.

The tournament commences on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT at Finkbine Golf Course, a par-72, 7,239-yard layout. The first 36 holes will be played on Saturday, while the final 18 holes are set for Sunday at 9 a.m. Both days will be a shotgun start.

The Huskers will be joined by 11 other teams in Iowa City: Iowa, Washington State, Kansas, Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Denver, Wisconsin, Marquette, Northern Illinois and DePaul.

Fresh off a season-best 13th-place finish, Matt Record will represent the No. 1 position for the Huskers at Finkbine Golf Course. Record fired 8-under-par 208 at the Desert Shootout to lead Nebraska to a sixth-place finish.

The No. 2 spot will be taken by Calvin Freeman, who also posted his best tournament result of the season. He tied for 19th with 211 strokes over 54 holes.

Junior Josh Reinertson earned a place in the NU lineup for the second consecutive week after notching a trio of 71s in Arizona. He set career-bests for score and finish at the tournament.

Ross Dickson is set to tee it up for the 10th time this season, having competed in every tournament in 2013-14. He has a 73.88 stroke average over 24 rounds and will be the No. 4 spot in Nebraska’s lineup.

The No. 5 position will be represented by Justin Jennings. The freshman has a 76.06 stroke average over 18 rounds.

Last Time Out: Huskers Fire 279 to Finish Sixth in Arizona
Nebraska posted its best round of the season with 9-under-par 279 on the final day of the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Club on Saturday, March 22.

The Huskers matched their best finish of the season with a sixth-place result in Arizona. NU also took sixth at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in October. The finish also marks Nebraska’s fifth top 10 of the season as the Huskers posted their best 54-hole total of the 2013-14 campaign with 846.

Nebraska opened the tournament on Thursday with 282 before producing a 285 total in Friday’s second round. The Huskers finished 13 strokes behind first place. UMKC edged BYU in a one-hole playoff to take home the team title.

Senior Matt Record produced the best individual Husker finish of the tournament with a tie for 13th. He carded 3-under-par 69 on Saturday, which ties his lowest of the season with Friday’s round. He added 2-under-par 70 in Thursday’s opening round.

Calvin Freeman, Josh Reinertson and Ross Dickson also each carded subpar rounds for the Huskers in the final round. Freeman, a junior from Table Rock, Neb., paced his way to 1-under-par 71 en route to a tie for 19th place. He opened the tournament with 68 before adding 72 on Friday.

Reinertson capped his performance with a third consecutive 71 on Saturday, giving him a 213 total over 54 holes. The junior set career bests for 18-hole round, 54-hole score and lowest finish with his performance at the Desert Shootout.

Dickson managed the lowest score of the day for Nebraska with 4-under-par 68, which marks the lowest of his season. He tied for 34th with 214 after posting 73s in each of the first two rounds.

Mike Siwa shot 233 over three rounds en route to an 85th-place finish. Aaron Wong, playing as an individual outside of the NU lineup, produced his second straight 73 en route to a tie for 71st at Palm Valley Golf Club, a par-72, 7,015-yard layout. He finished the tournament with a 225 total.

Off the Tee:
• The Huskers are making their fourth all-time appearance in the Hawkeye Invitational. Nebraska has placed in the top 10 in all three showings, managing its best finish, a tie for fifth, last season. In 2012, the Huskers took 10th, while tying for eighth at the rain-shortened event in 2011.

• Nebraska has managed a 294.67 stroke average over 24 rounds (eight stroke play tournaments) this season. The Huskers have shown successive improvement over each round, averaging 293.38 strokes in the third round. NU has a 296.00 stroke average in the first round and a 294.63 average in the second round.

• The Huskers have managed top-10 finishes in five of their eight stroke play events this season. Nebraska’s best finish is sixth place, which it has achieved twice. The first was at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in October. The most recent was the Huskers’ last outing at the Desert Shootout.

• Ross Dickson has appeared in every tournament this season, compiling a 73.88 stroke average over 24 rounds. His best finish was a tie for 13th at the Firestone Invitational in October.

• Josh Reinertson will be making his second stroke play appearance of the season this weekend. He produced a career-best performance in Nebraska’s last time out, tying for 29th at the Desert Shootout. He carded three rounds of 71 for a 3-under-par 213 total.

• Calvin Freeman is making his ninth start of the season, Matt Record is making his eighth and Justin Jennings is making his eighth.

• The Spring Ahead: After this weekend’s trip to Iowa, the Huskers have two tournaments scheduled, including the Big Ten Championships, May 2-4, at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind. Nebraska’s next trip is April 21-22 for the Oak Hill Intercollegiate in Rochester, N.Y.

• Calvin Freeman and Matt Record each finished in the top 30 of the Patriot All-America Invitational at The Wigwam’s Gold Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz., in December 2013. Freeman fired a 2-over-par 212 total over three rounds to tie for 13th among the 83-player field. Record shot 220 to tie for 28th.

• The Huskers signed Ben Maschka for the 2014-15 season during the winter offseason. Maschka will complete his senior year at Omaha Creighton Prep this spring. He finished second individually at the 2013 Nebraska Class A state championship, helping the Junior Jays to their second consecutive team title. He was a semifinalist at the 2013 Nebraska Men’s Match Play and a quarterfinalist at the 2013 Nebraska Junior Match Play.

• Under Head Coach Bill Spangler, who is in his 13th season, Nebraska has won 10 tournament titles. Spangler has also guided the Huskers to 30 top-three tournament finishes and six individual titles.

• The Nebraska men’s golf program has four NCAA Championship appearances along with seven NCAA Regional starts. In each season from 2010 to 2012, the Huskers sent one individual to the NCAA Regionals. Scott Willman tied for 40th at the Norman Regional (2012), Andrew Wyatt tied for 41st at the Colorado Regional (2011) and Brandon Crick tied for eighth at the West Regional (2010).
