Nebraska junior Cassie Deeg claimed the Minnesota State Women's Amateur Championship at Forest Hills Golf Club in Forest Lake, Minn., on Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Deeg, who is the top returning golfer for Coach Robin Krapfl's Huskers in 2014-15, led the tournament from nearly start to finish after opening with a one-over-par 73 on Monday, which put her in a tie for first with Katherine Marie Smith.

A native of Hugo, Minn., Deeg carried a one-shot lead into Wednesday's final round after firing a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday. Her 36-hole score of 147 put her one shot in front of Olivia Herrick, and two strokes ahead of Smith and Celia Kuenster.

Deeg closed the 43rd Minnesota Women's State Amateur Championship with her finest round, an even-par 72 to finish at three-over-par 219 over 54 holes. She ran away with the championship, finishing five strokes ahead of runner-up Anna Laorr (77-75-72-224) and six shots ahead of Kuenster (78-71-76-225), Hailey Boner (77-74-74-225) and Sarah Burnham (77-73-75-225).

Deeg and the rest of the Husker golfers will report to campus this weekend for the start of fall semester classes at Nebraska on Monday, Aug. 25. The Huskers open their 2014-15 season with the annual Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Golf Club, Sept. 8-9.
