Sheils Leads Huskers in Puerto Rico
Rio Grande, P.R. - Nebraska women's golfer Madeleine Sheils fired an even-par 72 to close the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in a tie for sixth place at The River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club Sunday.
With Sheils leading the way, the Huskers closed its opening round of the spring season in 11th place with a 309 in a loaded 15-team field in Puerto Rico. Sheils, a senior from Boise, Idaho, sits six strokes behind individual lead Emilee Burger from Georgia. Burger scorched the par-72 layout for a 66 Sunday. Four other golfers are tied for second at one-under-par 71.
LSU and Georgia are tied atop the team standings at 294, while Texas Tech sits just two strokes back in third at 296. Arkansas (297) and Oklahoma State (300) round out the top five. At the close of the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event, the Huskers were positioned ahead of Big Ten foes Michigan (310), Purdue (310) and Penn State (321).
While Sheils led the Huskers with a 72, sophomore Steffi Neisen notched Nebraska's second-best score of the day with a 78 to tie for 44th. Senior Kayla Knopik added a 79 to tie for 54th, while Katelyn Wright rounded out the scoring for the Huskers with an 80 to tie for 63rd in the individual standings.
Freshman Shelby Martinek managed an 81 to tie for 67th, but her score did not count toward NU's team total. Senior Katie Keiser added an 84 for the Huskers while playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup.
