Columbus, Ohio - Madeleine Sheils closed the first day in a tie for 21st to lead the Nebraska women's golf team at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on Saturday.
Sheils, a senior from Boise, Idaho, produced Nebraska's top individual round of the day with an opening-round 76 before settling for an 81 in unforgiving scoring conditions on the par 72, 6,268-yard layout of the Scarlet Course on Saturday.
Only one golfer in the 11-team field managed to shoot par over the first two rounds, as Ohio State's Rachel Rohanna stormed to the lead with rounds of 75 and 69 to close the day atop the leaderboard at 144. She owns a five-stroke lead over Iowa State's Punpaka Phuntumabamrun (149). Although Sheils settled for a 157 over two rounds, she is just eight strokes out of second heading into Sunday's final round.
Senior Kayla Knopik (81-81-162) and sophomore Katelyn Wright (77-85-162) sit in a tie for 42nd, while sophomore Steffi Neisen is tied for 54th (83-84-167) heading into the final 18 holes.
The unusually high scores left Nebraska in ninth place in the 11-team field through two rounds at 641 (317-324). The hosts from Ohio State are in control at 605 (308-297), but fellow Big Ten foes Northwestern (313-300-613) and Michigan State (312-301-613) are tied for second and in position to challenge for the lead on Sunday.
Nebraska will conclude its final regular-season tournament with 18 holes Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, before preparing for the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., April 27-29.
