Sheils, Neisen Earn NGCA Scholar-Athlete Awards

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln - Madeleine Sheils became the fourth Nebraska women's golfer in history to claim four NGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete awards when the organization announced its academic honor squads on July 6.

Sheils, a senior from Boise, Idaho, earned her fourth straight award from the National Golf Coaches Association for producing approximately a 3.9 grade-point average as a philosophy major. Sheils was also a leader for the Huskers on the course as a senior. The first-team All-Big Ten selection qualified for the NCAA Central Regional after taking third at the Big Ten Tournament.

The two-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week as a senior produced 18 career top-25 finishes as a Husker, while closing her career with the No. 2 career stroke average in school history (76.88).

Sheils joins former Huskers Jackie Beste (2003-04-05-06), Allison Stewart (2005-06-07-08) and JC Stevenson (2007-08-09-10) as Nebraska's four-time NGCA All-American Scholar-Athletes.

Nebraska sophomore Steffi Neisen joined Sheils on the 2012 NGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete team by capturing her second consecutive award. The New Prague, Minn., native produced NU's No. 2 stroke average on the season (76.67), while the education major continued to excel in the classroom.

Neisen, who will be Nebraska's top returning golfer for the 2012-13 season, also claimed NGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors as a freshman in 2010-11. She becomes the 19th two-time NGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete in Husker history.
