Huskers Off to Solid Start at Clover Cup

Mesa, Ariz. - Katelyn Wright fired an opening-round 72 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team to 300 team score after the first day of the Clover Cup on the Longbow Golf Course.

Wright's even-par 72 led a set of four solid scores for the Huskers, including three golfers among the top 20 in an 87-player field in the first round. Fellow senior Steffi Neisen carded a 75, while freshman Jordan Chael notched a 76 and sophomore Cassie Deeg rounded out NU's top four scores with a 77.

Wright, a senior from Incline Village, Nev., closed the first round in seventh, while Neisen enters the second round in a tie for 14th. Chael is tied for 19th, while Deeg is tied for 33rd.

Sophomore Cassidy Stelzmiller managed an 81 in the opening round to enter Saturday's second round in a tie for 74th, while fellow sophomore Morgan Smejkal is tied for 80th at 84 as an individual playing outside the Husker lineup.

Colorado closed the first 18 holes in the lead with a 292, while Michigan sits six shots back at 298. The hosts from Notre Dame and Louisville finished the day at 299 in a tie for third, just stroke ahead of the Big Red.

The tournament continues Saturday with 18 holes on the par-72, 6,209-yard layout at Longbow. Live scoring will be available at Huskers.com.
