Kiawah Island, S.C. - Mary Kate Bird remained in the hunt for an individual title by firing a two-over-par 74 in the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on Monday. Bird, a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., enters Tuesday's final round of the 215-player field in a three-way tie for first place at 146.

"Mary Kate is just playing awesome golf right now," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "Her ball-striking has been very good for both rounds and her short game is definitely on, which is putting her in a position to challenge for the tournament title."

Bird enter's Tuesday's final 18 holes on the Cougar Point Golf Course in a tie with Central Florida's Elisa Aoki and Florida's Jessica Yadloczky at 146. Aoki and Yadloczky fired matching rounds of 73 on Monday. Central Florida's Stephanie Connelly, who closed the first round with a two-under-par 70, managed a 77 on Monday to sit one stroke back of the leaders in a four-way tie for fourth place.

With Bird leading the charge, Nebraska closed the second day of the 54-hole event in a tie for 15th place in a 43-team field that is the largest event in collegiate golf this season.

Nebraska managed a 314 in the second round after producing a 309 in Sunday's first round to head into the third round at 623. Juniors JC Stevenson and Charlotte Wendner and true freshman Natalie Gleadall all managed second-round scores of 80 on Monday to round out NU's scoring lineup. Stevenson heads into the final round in a tie for 94th place at 160, while Wendner is in a tie for 109th at 161.

Sophomore Rachel Hanigan settled for a second-round 86 after opening the tournament with a 76 on Sunday to close the first 36 holes in a tie for 118th at 162. Gleadall is tied for 138th at 165.

Miami maintained the top spot after the tournament's second round, adding a 305 to its opening-round 300 to head into the final round at 605. The Hurricanes are one shot ahead of East Tennessee State, which managed a 306 on Monday after matching Miami's first-round 300. Central Arkansas narrowed the gap on the leaders by matching Toledo for Monday's best team score with a 300. Central Arkansas is just five strokes out of the lead at 610.
