Nebraska Prepares for Three-Match Weekend

NU Welcomes Utah, North Dakota, and Drake

The No. 44 Huskers return home to face Utah on Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. and North Dakota and No. 45 Drake on Sunday, March 9 at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Huskers sit at 7-4 overall, with a 2-3 mark against ranked teams including a 1-1 mark at the ITA Kick-off Weekend event in Los Angeles where they were able to grab a 4-1 victory over fellow Big Ten members Wisconsin.

Nebraska duo Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz have been impressive at No. 2 doubles this spring with a 6-3 overall. During the ITA Kick-off event, Herrmann and Treyz secured a win over No. 33 ranked Hugo Dojas and Maxime Hinnisdaels of Texas Tech. The Nebraska pair have performed fantastic this season with an outstanding 14-5 overall and they secured the Big Ten Indoors Championships Tournament doubles title during the fall preseason.

Herrmann knocked off No. 86-ranked Henry Craig at No. 1 singles in their win over Denver on Feb. 8. Freshman Vasileios Stavropoulos holds a 7-2 singles record this spring with two matches at the No. 5 and the rest played from the No. 6 spot, giving him a strong start to his career as a Husker. Senior Tom Blackwell also sits at 7-2 in singles this spring, switching between the No. 3 and 4 positions.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska jumped six spots to No. 44 in the ITA Top 75 after its weekend in New York to tally a 7-4 mark this season. The national ITA Top 75 rankings were released on Tuesday, March 4.

The Cornhuskers are one of 10 Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75. Nebraska is joined by No. 1 Ohio State, No. 6 Illinois, No. 24 Northwestern, No. 39 Michigan, No. 42 Minnesota, No. 49 Wisconsin, No. 54 Purdue, No. 57 Indiana, and No. 58 Iowa. Ohio State and Illinois are the only two Big Ten teams in the top ten and are joined by Northwestern to be the only three in the top 25.

The Huskers are the sixth-highest ranked Big Ten team. The Huskers are 2-3 against ranked opponents suffering losses to No. 36 Florida State, No. 53 Texas Tech and No. 49 Louisville while toppling No. 66 Wisconsin and No. 52 Denver.

The Utes are 9-2 coming off of a two match winning streak over DePaul and BYU ready to face the No. 44-ranked Huskers. Utah went 13-12 overall in 2013 and 2-5 in conference play. The Utes aren’t ranked with one ranked singles players in No. 110 Slim Hamza and no ranked doubles pairs.

The Sioux are 2-5 and 1-3 in conference play coming off of a two match losing streak with losses to Iowa and Eastern Washington prior to facing No. 44-ranked Nebraska. North Dakoka went 4-12 overall in 2013. North Dakota isn’t ranked as a team and has no ranked singles players and no ranked doubles pairs. This marks the first match ever between the Cornhuskers and the Highlanders.

2013 Record: 25-4, 5-0 MVC
National Ranking: 45

The Bulldogs are 7-4 coming off of a two victory streak over Iowa and Graceland prior to facing No. 44-ranked Nebraska. Drake went 25-4 overall in 2013 with a 5-0 undefeated conference mark in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake lost in the second round of the MVC tournament to Wichita State and also fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to the No. 1 team, UCLA. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 45 right behind Nebraska with no ranked singles players and one ranked doubles pair in Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel.

Looking Ahead

Next up for Nebraska is to begin their Big Ten conference play on the road against Minnesota on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. before returning to Lincoln for their conference home-opener against Wisconsin on Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
