Huskers Begin Four-Match Week on Wednesday

NU Faces Challenging Four-Match Week

The No. 62 Huskers face a four-match week starting off on the road against Iowa on Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa. After that, Nebraska returns home to welcome No. 34 Northwestern and unranked Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, April 11 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The Big Red finish out the week on Sunday when they host No. 11 Illinois on Sunday, April 13 at noon. The Huskers sit at 10-10 overall, with a 4-7 mark against ranked teams including a 2-4 mark in the Big Ten. The Huskers split the matches last weekend with a 6-1 victory over Indiana and were defeated 1-6 by the Purdue.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska moved up to No. 62 in the ITA Top 75 after its split-match weekend. The national ITA Top 75 rankings were released on Tuesday, April 8.

The Cornhuskers are one of ten Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75. Nebraska is joined by No. 1 Ohio State, No. 11 Illinois, No. 16 Penn State, No. 34 Northwestern, No. 36 Purdue, No. 50 Michigan, No. 55 Minnesota, No. 69 Indiana and No. 74 Wisconsin. Ohio State is the only Big Ten team in the top ten and is joined by Illinois and Penn State to be the only three in the top 25.

The Huskers are the eighth-highest ranked Big Ten team. The Huskers are 4-7 against ranked opponents suffering losses to No. 36 Florida State, No. 53 Texas Tech, No. 49 Louisville, No. 45 Drake, No. 50 Minnesota, No. 46 Michigan, and No. 33 Purdue while toppling No. 52 Denver, Wisconsin twice while they were ranked No. 66 and No. 58, and No. 69 Indiana.

The Hawkeyes are 9-9 coming off a six-match losing streak to face the No. 62-ranked Huskers. Iowa went 7-17 overall in 2013 and 0-11 in conference play, losing 4-1 to Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes are currently unranked in the ITA Top 75 with no ranked singles or doubles players. The last match between the two teams was on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 that resulted in a 6-1 victory for NU.

The Wildcats are 15-9 coming off a three-match winning streak to face the No. 62-ranked Huskers. Northwestern went 22-10 overall in 2013 and 6-5 in conference play, losing 4-2 to Illinois in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament and dropping from the NCAA Tournament on a 4-0 loss to Georgia in the second round. The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 34 in the ITA Top 75 with two ranked singles in No. 54 Raleigh Smith and No. 125 Sam Shropshire and one ranked doubles pair in No. 23 Mihir Kumar and Raleigh Smith. The last match between the two teams was on Saturday, March 9, 2013 that resulted in a 5-2 victory for NU.

The Illini are 11-3 and 5-2 in conference play coming off of a three-match winning streak heading to Lincoln to face the No. 62-ranked Nebraska Huskers. Illinois went 17-11 overall in 2013 with a 8-3 Big Ten mark and fell 4-0 to Ohio State in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament and were dropped from the NCAA Tournament by Vanderbilt 4-1 in the second round. Illinois is ranked No. 11 as a team in the ITA Top 75 and has three ranked singles in No. 8 Jared Hiltzik, No. 11 Farris Gosea and No. 45 Tim Kopinski. The Illini have two ranked doubles pairs in the ITA rankings in No. 5 Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon and No. 72 Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse.

Next up for Nebraska is a two-match road trip, facing Penn State on Friday, April 18 at 3 p.m. in University Park, Pa. before moving on to challenge Ohio State on Sunday, April 20 at noon in Columbus, Ohio.
