Nebraska Rolls North Texas in NCAA First Round
Austin, Texas - The No. 2 seed Nebraska women's tennis team swept No. 3 seed North Texas by a score of 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. The win marks only the second first round victory in Nebraska program history, and the first time the Huskers have swept an opponent in NCAA Tournament play. With the win, Nebraska (24-4, 9-2 Big Ten) picked up its 24th team victory this season while eliminating North Texas (18-7, 6-0 Sun Belt) from NCAA contention.
Nebraska got off to a fast start on the morning, capturing the doubles point and following the team's trend of doubles dominance this season. NU's No. 3 duo of Janine Weinreich and Izabella Zgierska (NU) gave the Huskers their first win of the day, downing Franziska Sprinkmeyer and Paula Dinuta (NT), 8-1.
The Huskers then secured the doubles point on the No. 2 courts. Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova (NU) picked up their 21st doubles victory this spring as they topped Kseniya Bardabush and Valentina Starkova (NT), 8-3.
"It always makes you feel a bit better when you get off to a quick start like we did today," Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. "I think the momentum of the doubles helped with the singles matches."
The Huskers carried their 1-0 lead and accompanying confidence onto the singles courts, where 47th-ranked Weatherholt struck first for the Big Red. The redshirt junior posted her 30th singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over North Texas' Bardabush at the No. 1 singles position. The victory moves Weatherholt into a tie for second all-time for singles victories in a season, trailing only her own record of 36 set in 2008-09.
109th-ranked Weinreich extended Nebraska's lead to 3-0 on the No. 5 singles court, picking up a quick 6-4, 6-1 victory over North Texas' Ilona Serchenko (NT). The win is Weinreich's 24th singles victory this season; additionally, the junior's two wins on the day gave her 100 career combined victories over three seasons at NU.
The match wrapped up as Nebraska picked up its match-clinching fourth win at the No. 4 singles position. Weinstein snapped up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over North Texas' Vykydalova to suspend competition on the remaining three singles courts and give NU the win. Weinstein now has 51 combined victories this season, tied for second all-time at Nebraska and trailing only teammate Weatherholt's 56 this season.
NU will advance to second round play at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center tomorrow, facing the winner of today's matchup between No. 1 seed Texas and No. 4 seed Wichita State. Tomorrow's second round match is slated for a 1 p.m. (CT) start at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The winner of the second round matchup will advance to the NCAA Championships for the round of 16 in Athens, Ga. on May 17-18.
