Huskers Sweep Gophers on Senior Day

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 18 Nebraska women's tennis team swept the the No. 33 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday afternoon by a score of 7-0. Both of the Huskers' seniors fought hard on Senior Day, as Madeleine Geibert and Jennifer Holmberg both took home singles wings for NU. The Huskers (22-3, 8-2 Big Ten) achieved their 22nd win this season with the victory over Minnesota (14-7, 4-6 Big Ten), tying the women's tennis program record for wins in a season.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) took the first win of the day, snapping up a victory over Natallia Pintusava and Magdalena Wiecha (UMN), 8-0. Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova (NU) quickly followed, picking up an 8-0 sweep over Doron Muravnik and Alexa Palen (UMN) in No. 2 doubles and giving  NU a 1-0 lead in the match.

Nebraska completed its sweep of doubles action at the No. 3 position, as Janine Weinreich and Izabella Zgierska (NU) outlasted Tereza Brichacova and Aria Lambert (UMN), 8-6.

The Huskers took their 1-0 lead to singles play against the Gophers and quickly extended it to 2-0 with a win at the No. 1 position. Nebraska's 45th-ranked Weatherholt picked up NU's first singles win in the top position, cruising past UMN's Pintusava by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

Veresova (NU) took the next victory for the Big Red in No. 3 singles, downing Alexa Palen (UMN), 6-3, 6-3 to give NU a 3-0 lead on the match.

Nebraska's match-clinching fourth point came at the hands of senior Jennifer Holmberg at the No. 6 position, who picked up a victory in her last home match of her career with a solid 6-3, 6-1 victory over Minnesota's Umanets. Weinstein followed, adding to Nebraska's lead as she battled past the Gophers' Brichacova to pick up a win in No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4

The Huskers continued the match with Weinreich's victory over Minnesota's Courter in No. 5 singles. Weinreich took the first set by a score of 7-5, but Courter was forced to retire the match due to injury. Weinreich walked away with a 7-5, 4-5 (retired) victory.

NU concluded the match with senior Madeleine Geibert fighting for her last home victory at Nebraska. Geibert would use every last ounce of energy to beat a very tough Doron Muravnik (UMN) at the No. 2 position. Muravnik took the first set by a score of 4-6, but Geibert was relentless, fighting back to take the second set 7-5, and going into a tiebreaker. Geibert took the final tiebreak by a score of 1-0 (10-8), giving the Huskers a clean sweep and their 22nd win this season.

Nebraska will be back in action in their final regular season match of the season on Sunday, April 22 against Wisconsin. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at the Nielsen Tennis Center on University of Wisconsin's campus.
