2012-13: Senior The 2012 and 2013 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year, Weatherholt was the best player in Nebraska women’s tennis history. The unanimous first-team All-Big Ten choice also earned Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner two years running and NU’s 2013 Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was a candidate of CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and received the ITA National Cissie Leary Sportsmanship award, one of the ITA's most prestigious accolades. Weatherholt earned the 2013 Big Ten Medal of Honor Award for Nebraska, an honor given to one female athlete of all Nebraska women's sports by the Big Ten. The winningest player in school history, Weatherholt boasts a school-record 208 career combined wins, including a 52-6 mark in 2012-13.
She became the first Husker in history to win a combined 200 matches in singles and doubles, accomplishing the feat in Nebraska's first-round NCAA Tournament victory over Wichita State on May 10.
Weatherholt finished the NCAA Championships and season ranked No. 3 nationally in doubles with partner Patricia Veresova, while Weatherholt climbed to No. 2 in the ITA singles ranking. Both rankings were the highest ever by a Husker.
Weatherholt’s performance on the court earned her ITA All-Amercian honors in both singles and doubles, being the first player in program history to achieve the feat in singles. With partner Veresova, they are the second tandem ever to earn All-America honors on the doubles court and reached the NCAA Elite Eight in doubles competition, the furthest of any duo for Nebraska.
Weatherholt owns a 30-2 singles record this season going undefeated in Big Ten play at 11-0 playing from the No. 1 singles spot all year. She has topped Nebraska’s career singles list with 123, overtaking Sandra Noetzel’s 101 on Friday, Feb. 22 on a victory against UALR. Her only losses this season came to Oklahoma State’s then-No. 83 Malika Rose 4-6, 6-4, 5-7 on March 21 and the national champion No. 13 Nicole Gibbs from Stanford on May 27 in the National Championship match, making her the 2013 NCAA Singles runner-up. Weatherholt’s singles execution this season has placed her No. 2 in the singles rankings, the highest in Nebraska history.
Weatherholt also amassed a 22-3 doubles record on the spring, all from the No. 1 spot with partner Veresova, going a perfect 9-0 in conference matches. Weatherholt has reached No. 3 on the career doubles individual wins list with 85 behind teammate Stefanie Weinstein (first, 94) and former teammate Madeleine Geibert (second, 91). Weatherholt and Veresova’s only spring losses came to Oklahoma State’s Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana 5-8 on March 21 and No. 25 Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA in the NCAA quarterfinals match on May 25.
Weatherholt collected Big Ten Player-of-the-Week awards three times in the spring (Jan. 30, Feb. 13, March 13). Weatherholt graduated in May 2012 with a 3.873 GPA as a business administration major. She helped the team to earn the Herman Award for Nebraska’s highest team GPA of all Huskers women’s sports in 2012 and 2013 and secured her third straight 2013 Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award.
2011-12: Junior Weatherholt earned a trip to the 2012 NCAA Women's Singles Championship as an at-large selection after helping the Huskers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She captured Big Ten Player-of-the-Year honors and was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection after finishing with a 30-11 singles record. Her 30 wins were tied for second on NU's single-season list, trailing only her 36 wins as a freshman in 2008-09. Weatherholt earned her first trip to the 2012 NCAA Women's Singles Championship as an at-large selection.
Weatherholt went 10-1 at the No. 1 spot in Big Ten action with her only loss coming in a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Michigan's No. 11 Emina Bektas on April 13 in Lincoln. Weatherholt ended her junior season with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to California All-American Zsofi Susanyi in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Weatherholt finished her junior season ranked No. 49 in the ITA singles rankings, and she also produced 26 doubles victories. Her 56 combined singles and doubles wins established a Nebraska record, breaking Doneta Holman's mark of 51 in 1989-90. She has climbed to No. 2 in Nebraska history with 93 career singles wins in just over three seasons, trailing only Sandra Noetzel's school-record 101 victories (1996-2000). Weatherholt's 93-22 career record (.809) ranks as the top winning percentage in school history, nearly 100 points higher than No. 2 Nancy Tyggum (.729, 1987-90).
Weatherholt has added a 62-22 career doubles mark and her 156 career combined wins ranks No. 3 in school history. She posted a 26-6 doubles record in 2011-12, including an 8-3 Big Ten mark paired with Patricia Veresova at No. 2. The duo's only Big Ten losses came to Ohio State, Purdue and Michigan.
An outstanding student, Weatherholt carries nearly a 3.9 GPA as a business administration major at Nebraska. She was an academic All-Big Ten selection, and she was honored as the ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award winner. She was also Nebraska's winner of a 2012 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for women's tennis.
2010-11: Redshirt Weatherholt suffered a knee injury early in the fall season and took a redshirt season. She earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters, and she earned a Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for her contributions in the community.
2009-10: Sophomore Weatherholt continued her assault on the Nebraska record book by rolling to a 26-6 record as a sophomore. Her .812 winning percentage placed her No. 5 on the Nebraska single-season list. She also climbed to No. 1 in career singles winning percentage (.861) with a 62-10 mark through her first two seasons at Nebraska.
Weatherholt played the season exclusively at the No. 1 or 2 positions, capturing 20 singles wins in the spring.At the end of the season, Weatherholt was named the the All-Big 12 Singles Team for the second consecutive year.
Weatherholt also had a stellar season in doubles, where she played much of the season at the No. 3 position with Jennifer Holmberg. The duo’s 13 wins were second-best on the team, and their 9-1 Big 12 mark led the squad. In April, Weatherholt and Holmberg captured the Big 12 No. 3 doubles championship.
Weatherholt also found success in the classroom in 2009-10, earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors, while claiming spots on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters.
2008-09: Freshman Weatherholt turned in one of the best individual seasons in Nebraska history as a freshman in 2008-09. She started her season with a bang, winning a pair of fall tournaments, including the singles title at the Midland Invitational, on her way to a 16-2 fall singles record. Weatherholt carried her fantastic fall into the beginning of the spring season. She won her first 11 singles matches, the first 10 of those in straight sets.
Weatherholt suffered her only two losses of the spring season after her 11-0 start, falling to Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk and Texas A&M's Morgan Frank. Weatherholt rallied to win her final nine matches of the season, giving her a 20-2 spring singles record. She capped the season by being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 singles team. Weatherholt's singles record of 36-4 set the NU single-season record for singles wins, bettering the previous record of 30 that Sandra Noetzel set back in the 1998-99 season. Her 50 combined wins on the season ranked second all-time at NU, falling one short of Doneta Holmen's record of 51 wins set in 1989-90.
Off the court, she earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.
Before Nebraska Weatherholt was the top-ranked player in the state of Kansas after playing her high school tennis at Shawnee Mission South. She was the 2006 Class 6A singles champion and was ranked as high as No. 28 in the nation in the 18-and-under division. Weatherholt is the highest-ranked American-born player to ever play tennis at Nebraska.
Personal Mary was born on Aug. 2, 1991, in Kansas City, Mo. She is the daughter of Nancy Weatherholt and Reynold Simpson. Mary has two brothers, Rob Simpson and Will Simpson. A business administration major, Weatherholt earned her bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2012, playing her senior season as a graduate student. She was Nebraska's Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2013.
Weatherholt earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, she won the prestigious ITA Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, after claiming the ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership & Sportsmanship Award in 2012. She earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors in 2010. Weatherholt earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2011 and 2012, and the spring semester of 2012. She was a six-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
