Huskers to Compete at Prairie View A&M Invite

The Nebraska bowling team will be traveling to its fifth competition of the year as it takes part in the Prairie View A&M invite, held from Feb. 3-5 at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas. The invitational will feature a field of twelve teams. The Huskers are coming off of a third-place finish at the Big Red Invitational that was held in Lincoln in mid-January.
The twelve teams participating in the event include Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Maryland Eastern-Shore, Arkansas State, Central Missouri, Valparaiso, Sam Houston State, LA Tech, Texas Southern, Jackson State, Norfolk State and Prairie View A&M.
Traveling with the Huskers will be Valerie Calberry, Kayla Johnson, Liz Kuhlkin, Yan Ling, Kristi Mickelson and Shalima Zalsha.
The format of the Invite includes five four-game baker matches on Feb. 3, five traditional team games on Feb. 4 and three four-of-seven baker game matches on the final day, Feb. 5.
The Invitational marks the first time that Prairie View A&M has hosted a bowling tournament. The three-day event will be streamed on www.bowl.com.
Following the Prairie View A&M Invite, the Huskers will take part in the Morgan State Invitational from Feb. 17-19 in Baltimore, Md.
Review: Big Red Invitational:
The Nebraska bowling team finished third at its lone home event of the year in the third-annual Big Red Invitational. The Huskers finished just behind Central Missouri and tournament champion Arkansas State. Nebraska averaged nearly ten pins more per game than fourth-place finishing Sam Houston State. NU's Kristina Mickelson earned a spot on the Big Red Invitational's All-Tournament Team with her individual average of 222 pins per game in Friday's singles competition.
Saturday's final competition saw the Huskers shoot 1,123 in the first 4 of 7 baker competition. Nebraska rolled games of 151, 179, 224, 179, 210 and 180 to average 187.17.
In the second round of the day, the Huskers squared off with the Central Missouri Jennies and won in five games, (231-181, 203-192,176-215, 248-182, 199-190)
Finally, the Huskers squared off with eventual champion Arkansas State. Mere hundredths of pins separated the two teams' average at the time, but Arkansas State held ground and Central Missouri surged ahead of the Huskers in the final round. The Huskers shot 209, 165, 156 and 205 to Arkansas State's 232, 191, 210 and 219.
Central Missouri shot 200, 212, 268, 229, 217, 224 and 232 in its seven-game thriller with Wisconsin-Whitewater.
