Matt Smith was promoted to Associate Communications Director in July of 2016. He has spent 15 years with the Nebraska Communications Department, including 10 years as a full-time staff member and previous experience as both an undergraduate student assistant and graduate intern.
Smith serves as the secondary contact for the Husker football team and as the editor and producer of the Nebraska Game Day Football Program. In addition to assisting with all media inquiries and interview requests for the football program, Smith assists with the production of Nebraska's annual media guide and weekly game notes, helps maintain the football content on Huskers.com and coordinates Nebraska's statistics crew for all home games. Smith travels with the football team to every game and has done so since becoming the secondary contact in 2009. Smith and the Nebraska football communications staff have been honored with a "Super 11 Award" by the Football Writers Association of America four times since 2009. The award is presented to only 11 schools each year and is designed to "identify and reward the sports information departments and programs that exemplify excellent media relations."
In addition to his role with the Nebraska football program, Smith also focuses on strategic research within the Athletic Department, which includes developing communications to promote and enhance Nebraska's brand for recruiting purposes and the creation of targeted research and messaging for Husker coaches and administrators. He also was instrumental in the creation of the Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame and compiles all research and statistics for the Hall of Fame. Smith also serves as the primary contact between the Nebraska Athletic Department and the University of Nebraska Print & Copy Services, coordinating all printing projects for the Communications office and other areas within the department.
Previously, Smith spent 14 seasons as the primary communications contact for the Nebraska softball team from 2004 to 2017. He began his time with the softball team as an undergraduate student assistant in 2004, filling a role previously held by a full-time staff member. In his duties as the softball communications director, Smith was responsible for the production of the annual media guide, weekly game notes, interview requests and maintenance of the softball page on Huskers.com, as well as serving as official scorer for all home games. He hosted one Big Ten Tournament and four NCAA Regional tournaments during his time as softball communications director.
Smith also spent two seasons as Nebraska's soccer communications director in 2004 and 2005, hosting an NCAA Regional in his final season. Smith earned his undergraduate degree in May of 2004 in advertising with minors in communication studies and English. Following his graduation, he spent more than three years as a graduate intern before being promoted to a full-time role in February of 2008.
