Seven Husker Letterwinner alumni represented their various companies at the 2013 Student-Athlete Career Fair which was attended by well approximately 350 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th year student-athletes. “It is always a huge plus to have former Huskers leading the recruiting charge as they can best relate to the special transferable skills that make athletes especially marketable,” explained Keith Zimmer, Director of Life Skills.
The purpose of the event is to connect student-athletes with career information and opportunities preparing them for the eventual transition into real world 101. Twenty-nine companies and or graduate programs were in attendance as part of the annual UNL Career Fair week which kicked off in the athletic department in the West Stadium Club. N-Club members Dr. Jeff Hill (football), Blaine Hoppenrath (swimming and diving), Amy Benge (golf), Kellen McClure (track and field), Brandon Rigoni (football), Josh Mueller (football), John Hastings (track and field) and Paige Hubl (volleyball) were proud to represent their company and give special insight to further the career development and transition of their younger peers.
“I told them to find a career they love and are passionate about,” said the former volleyball team captain Hubl. Mueller relies upon many of the same qualities that allowed him to become an impact tight end for the Big Red. “Skills like determination, competitiveness, work-ethic, focus and interpersonal relations have truly set me apart.”
All in all, the Student-Athlete Career fair, now in its’ 22nd year, is one of the premier life skills major events that is well received by letterwinner alums, current student-athletes, employers and professional schools alike.
