Huskers Start Spring Practice

Lincoln - The Nebraska football team began spring practice by taking the field for 2 ½ hours in helmets and shorts in the Hawks Championship Center on Wednesday afternoon. Head Coach Bo Pelini sent the Huskers through drills and breakout work, as the team prepares for the annual Red-White Spring game on April 17.

"It was ok," Pelini said. "The effort was good. It is just like anything, you have a lot of new guys, a lot of new guys playing. There is a lot to learn. It is what you would expect for the first day, but I really liked the effort and the intensity. Guys were flying around."

Pelini noted that he sees the team exhibiting an energized attitude this spring in terms of knowing what they are doing and being sure of their roles.

"I think our guys are excited," Pelini said. "They're having fun, they're confident in what they are doing. Like I said, the effort is good and as long as that continues, we'll be ok."

The goal of spring practice for the Huskers remains consistent, laying a foundation of knowledge for the players to build off of throughout the spring, into the summer and through fall camp.

"To me it's about fundamentals, technique and basics," Pelini said. "(It's) getting the kids taught and developed. We took a first step, it is never as clean as you'd like it to be on the first day, and there is still a lot to learn. We're not in full pads, we're in shorts and helmets, and it's kind of hard to get a lot done. We get a lot of teaching done and we'll go from there, move on to the next one."

Pelini talked briefly about the state of the Husker quarterbacks in spring ball. He noted that they will continually be challenged through physical practices each day.

"They are under fire every day to perform, execute, run the offense and do all those things," Pelini said.
"It's not like you have to set it up, it's part of practice. It's part of the deal, you have to execute. The inherent pressure on that every single day, the competition is on. We put them in a bunch of situations. We'll scrimmage maybe a little bit more than we have in the past."

Nebraska will continue with its 15 allotted spring workouts on Friday afternoon. Tickets for the spring game remain available on Huskers.com and through the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8 BIG RED.
