At each Nebraska home game beginning in 2006, special members of the armed services were chosen as Gate Guardians. The Sentries protect the Nebraska football team's entry onto the field of Memorial Stadium for the Tunnel Walk.
The bronze gates feature artistic renderings of former Nebraska football greats, including Bob Brown, George Sauer, George Flippin, Guy Chamberlin, Sam Francis and Bobby Reynolds.
Members of the Nebraska National Guard acted as Tunnel Walk Sentries throughout the 2006 campaign. The pair of representatives were chosen each week by the National Guard.
The Sentries pictured with this article were the first to stand guard at Nebraska for the Huskers' 2006 season opener against Louisiana Tech. Sergeant Michael Sharples of Fullerton, Neb., and Specialist Richard Delancey of Columbus, Neb., are both members of the 1075th Transportation Company of the Nebraska Army National Guard out of Columbus. Both were previously awarded the Bronze Star for valor.
