Official Blog of the Huskers
It’s Wednesday, Aug. 21, and the Nebraska Athletics social media community has hit a major milestone, gaining its 100,000th follower on Twitter. Congratulations to everyone involved with #Huskers social media and a big #GBR! to Big Red loyalists who come through every time we ask you to support us in this wild, wacky, wonderful world of instant communication. You’re the ones who got us off the launching pad at 6:36 a.m. on Monday, March 15, 2010 – the first Tweet ever from Nebraska Athletics, urging fans to tune into ESPN that night and find out which team the No. 3-ranked Nebraska Women’s Basketball Team would play, what seed they would have and where they would be headed.
You were there to lift up Ndamukong Suh and help him achieve the largest TweetUp in the world. You were there to have some fun with Courtney Love, the grunge icon who found a connection with Courtney Love, the Nebraska football recruit. You were there this summer to help the Huskers come from behind and outsprint Florida State to the end zone, so ESPN could crown your Huskers the ultimate college football team over the last 25 years. Half of you joined us last year when we commemorated 50 years of consecutive sellouts with reaching 50,000 followers on Twitter.
And guess what? Those are just the Nos. 6 through 10 Tweets that our own panel of experts carefully considered and then placed in a Top Ten to represent the all-time favorite tweets in our first 2½ years. The top five are compelling, and we introduce them from 5 to 1, so conjure up a drum roll, please, and camp on these #Huskers tweets: an incredible social media day with tag board; the hiring of Tim Miles as head basketball coach and his immediate immersion into savvy technology, using a groundbreaking twitter chat as part of his press conference. Talk about being on the up-in-up. Miles now ranks No. 3 in College Basketball Twitter Coach Rankings and is a must-follow. And let’s not forget Nebraska’s head football coach because when Bo Pelini Tweets, Harlem Shakes. No wonder Big Red Nation likes to tweet, rattle and roll.
Even with all of that, we’re still not to the top of the heap and the king of the hill, so consider Nebraska Athletics’ top two Tweets of all time as a split vote between Dr. Tom Osborne’s retirement and Jack Hoffman’s absolutely amazing Spring Game touchdown run. They are mutually exclusive, of course, but still inextricably linked. Why? Because Osborne hired Pelini, who made the decision to do something special for Jack, who, in turn, became an inspirational part of Nebraska football … now and forever. Somehow, it’s hard not to remember that first day Jack Hoffman arrived on Nebraska’s campus and prepared to meet Rex Burkhead, the hero who became his friend. Before that ever happened, though, Jack ran into Osborne in a hallway, and Nebraska’s all-time iconic legend got down on his knees so he could look Jack straight in the eye and welcome him to Memorial Stadium.
A Tweet can create all kinds of magical moments, and more importantly, they allow you to share them with friends and strangers alike, as long as they’re willing to join the conversation.
