As Christmas approaches, I would like to take an opportunity to wish each of you and your families a safe and happy holiday season. We appreciate your continued support of Nebraska Athletics.
I am proud of the young men in our program and what they have accomplished this season. The honors and statistics on the field are well known and publicized, but I am proud of what are players are doing in the classroom and community.
Three of our seniors, Spencer Long, Jake Long and C.J. Zimmerer earned Academic All-America honors this fall, continuing our nation-leading tradition in football and across all of our sports. Spencer also earned a National Football Foundation Post-Graduate Scholarship, and C.J. was named to the American Football Coaches’ Association Good Works Team for his community outreach efforts.
Those three young men are a great example to other student-athletes and will be successful in whatever they choose to do in the future.
Spencer and Jake Long are two of 10 student-athletes on our 2013 football team who will pick up their degree on Saturday. We have an outstanding group of seniors in our football program. The fact that 19 of our 23 seniors will travel to the bowl game as college graduates says a lot about their character and commitment.
We had the opportunity to honor our academic and athletic successes at our team banquet last weekend. Our entire coaching staff enjoyed the chance to spend some time with our players and their families. The players in our program sacrifice a lot to play college football, but I want to recognize the sacrifices their families make as well.
Our football team is excited for the opportunity to play Georgia in the Gator Bowl and represent Nebraska in its 50th all-time bowl appearance.
Go Big Red!
