When Nebraska and Iowa officials discussed their second annual Heroes Game, they didn't look far for fitting candidates to promote it. Kathy Griess of Fremont, Neb., and Gary Launderville of Storm Lake, Iowa, were the 2011 inaugural Heroes Game Award Winners Presented by Hy-Vee, so they're the ones featured in a 30-second video calling for nominations that are due on Oct. 21. Nominate your hero on this official form or pick one up at any Hy-Vee store in Nebraska and Iowa. Forms also are available at Red Cross offices in both states.
Griess is a three-time breast cancer survivor and a law enforcement officer who pulled off the highway when she saw smoke coming from a mobile home park. She helped a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old escape a fire before trucks arrived. Launderville and his wife, Sandy, have fostered125 children and adopted seven to join their family of six. Gary was hit by an SUV and thrown 20 feet into the air when he was rescuing a mother and a child stranded in a raging snowstorm.
Greiss and Launderville are ordinary people whose extraordinary acts were selected by Red Cross staff and volunteers from a field of more than 200 nominations. Honored last November at the first Heroes Game in Lincoln, they represent families and fans, states and universities and two athletic departments that have worked closely and diligently to base the Nebraska-Iowa football rivalry on victory, valor and a vision to uphold values that carry an equal emphasis on excellence. The second Heroes Game at Iowa on Friday, Nov. 23, will honor both states' everyday heroes. The winner of the 11 a.m. nationally televised game on ABC will receive the Heroes Game Trophy and keep it until the next year's game.
Please click Greiss's and Launderville's names in the first paragraph and watch each describe the experiences that enabled hero status. Each video will give you an idea of the magnitude of each everyday hero's actions and help you nominate your own hero.
