After nearly a month of practices, the Nebraska football team is finally set for game day. The Huskers wrapped up physical workouts for the week with a two-hour practice in half pads inside the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday. All that stands between the Big Red and Saturday's opener against Florida Atlantic is a Friday afternoon walkthrough and team meetings.
"I thought it was pretty sharp, pretty crisp. The communication was good," Head Coach Bo Pelini said of Thursday's workout.
The Huskers' offensive and defensive depth chart released on Thursday features 20 players who have never appeared in a game for NU, which has Pelini excited to see what the newcomers can contribute.
"Our intention is to play a number of guys, especially in the areas where we don't have a lot of experience, and find out who the guys are, who's going to step up and who's going to play," Pelini said. "We kind of rep guys equally pretty much anyway, so it will be fun to watch on Saturday."
Keith Williams was forced to sit out again Thursday with an injury, but Pelini expects that he will be ready to go on Saturday.
Nebraska's head coach also announced Thursday that starting placekicker Alex Henery will be the Huskers' starting punter as well.
Although the team's excitement is building for the matchup with the Owls, Pelini said they still have to mentally focus on Friday and finish preparing in the right way to play a good game.
"It's about time we found out how far we've come and where we are," Pelini said.
