Football Post-Practice Report (Oct. 28th, 2009)

Linclon, Neb.---In preparation for its upcoming matchup against the Baylor Bears, the Nebraska football team took the practice field on Wednesday for a little over two hours in helmets and shoulder pads. The Huskers split time between the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields, just northeast of Memorial Stadium.

Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini came away from practice impressed with the way the team has practiced to up this point of the week.

"It was good. Good practice," Pelini said. "We've had a good week so far."

When asked about the Baylor's offense after practice, Pelini immediately pointed to the speed that the Bears bring to the table. Pelini said the Huskers will have their fair share of one-on-one situations on the defensive side of the ball against the Bears.

"Speed, speed. They have speed all over the place," Pelini said. "They have receivers who can fly. A running back who can fly and they're going to take their shots down field. You just have to be able to live through those shots and defend them, and at the same time try to handle the inside and play the run. They stretch the field and they force you into a lot of one-on-one situations. Probably more than any team we face this year, they're willing to take those deep shots down field."

One player that has caught the eye of Pelini so far this season is sophomore Cameron Meredith. Through the first seven games, Meredith has produced 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack, playing behind junior Pierre Allen. Pelini said the Huskers are looking for ways to get Meredith on the field more often.

"Cameron has played good football all year," Pelini said. "There's not much drop-off when he's in there, just have to find a way to get him on the field more."

The Huskers return to the practice field on Thursday. Kickoff for Saturday's game against Baylor is set for 11:30 a.m. and can be seen on the Versus network. Check back to Huskers.com for more updates on the Nebraska football team.
