Huskers Continue Final Week of Spring Practices

By NU Athletic Communications
Lincoln - Nebraska continued its last week of spring practices with a 2-hour workout Wednesday afternoon, utilizing both the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields. The workout is the second of three practices to be held this week before Saturday's annual Red-White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium.

Linebackers Coach Ross Els spoke with media members following practice about the depth of the linebacker corps he will be leading in 2011. Els said that while he has a strong duo of returners in Lavonte David and Will Compton, depth is an ongoing concern.

"We need to establish depth," Els added. "Bo (Pelini) has said it several times: Depth at the linebacker position is something we need to get better at. We've got some work to do."

Els also spoke on what it takes to establish depth at the position, emphasizing the importance of younger players getting experience in practice.

"We try to get them as much game experience as we can through practice. Our practices are fairly physical, so we want to put them in situations over and over again so when they do get that first snap, they're ready to go."

Secondary Coach Corey Raymond also spoke to media members, explaining the importance of refining technique among players.

"You don't want to rely on athleticism," he said. "When you meet a guy that has the same athleticism, it comes down to who has the best technique and the best skills. A few guys are upper-echelon guys, but everybody else is on the same level. It's the guy that works the most in the offseason, and to do that, you win in the summer time."

Nebraska has only one practice remaining this Friday before ending spring practice Saturday with the annual Red-White spring game. Tickets remain available on and through the NU Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8 BIG RED.
