Turnovers Costly In Loss To Eagles

By NU Athletic Communications

Southern Miss Coach Jeff Bower Postgame Quotes

On the game

I'm proud of our football team. We came into this game believing in ourselves and expecting to win. We knew we would have to overcome adversity. Our offense sputtered in the second half, but we came up with the big play in Naton Stewarts' interception return for a touchdown. We just found a way to win this football game.

On winning the game

It was a good win against an outstanding football program that has a lot of good athletes. It was a good win for our football team.

On stopping Nebraska in the last drive

We just went out and made plays. The delay of game penalty helped us.

On preparing for Nebraska's offense

It was hard for our scout team to simulate all the shifting they did. In a way, it makes our defense be simpler in its gameplan. It's a good offense to get reaty for.

On Dustin Almond's fourth quarter touchdown pass to Michael Young to give USM the lead

It was a naked bootleg where the quarterback (Dustin Almond) had three options. He got out there pretty clean and didn't have a lot of pressure on him. He went through his progression and Michael Young made the big play.

On the Southern Miss offense, in general

We weren't very sharp on offense. Our quarterback (Almond) wasn't sharp. We didn't throw the ball well. The crowd was a factor as well. They were very noisy. We didn't really play all that well offensively, but we didn't beat ourselves.

On the Southern Miss secondary

I thought they played well. They almost came up with another interception or two, but, all in all, we played pretty well in the secondary.

On Nebraska's fans

I didn't hear one derogatory word as we came off the field today. I've never seen a classier bunch of fans.

On the Southern Miss defense

I thought our defense played well. We weren't particularly good on first down, but we hung in there and like last year, we bent but didn't break. We gave up yards, but not points.

On USM linebacker Michael Boley

He showed up a lot today. He is a playmaker.

On the team in general

This is a mentally tough football team. During preseason camp, we put them in difficult situations, and they responded.

Southern Miss Player Quotes

Quarterback Dustin Almond

On his game-winning touchdown pass

It was supposed to be a quick route to the tight end, and I looked up and the safety was sitting kind of flat-footed and I saw Marvin (Young)get behind him, so I figured I'd put it up. He's a playmaker, so I figured he'd go out there and cactch it.

On the offense

We started out a little shaky. I know I was kind of rough trying to get into the game. I started to calm down in the second half and we started to run the ball a little better. The big play-action pass really helped things out on offense. It was the first game and we had to get the offense together and it took a little time to come around.

On the defense

Our defense played a heckuva game and gave us the ball on the plus side of the field and we got two field goals out of that and that helped more than anything.

Linebacker Michael Boley

On beating Nebraska

They came to the Rock last year and beat us pretty good. It felt good to come up here and get a win.

On how the defense played

We were giving up a lot of yards early in drives and then, there comes a point in a drive when you have to say you're going to stop them and create some kind of play to turn the drive around, and that's what we did. We've got a lot of playmakers on this defense and they showed it today. They stepped up and they made plays when it counted.

Running Back Anthony Harris

On the win

This is a very big win for our program. We just wanted to do everything right and come out and play hard. We figured if we had 100 percent ball security, we'd come away with a win.

On Nebraska's defense

Nebraska has a real strong defense. I take my hat off to them. They played well and we just took what they gave us and came out with the win.

Linebacker Antoine Cash

On the win

It was a great win. We've been thinking about the game for the last 3-4 months. Nebraska is a great football team.

On Nebraska's turnovers

With our defense, we key on turnovers. That's the way we have to win the game. We know our defense has to step up and make plays. We key ourselves on turnovers. Our coaches did a great job of getting us prepared and we executed.
