Nebraska Head Coach Bill Callahan announced on Thursday that Ted Gilmore has joined the Husker coaching staff as receivers coach. Gilmore comes to Nebraska after spending the past two seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Colorado, where he also served as receivers coach.

Coach Callahan first announced Gilmore’s hiring to the team on Thursday afternoon, and confirm the appointment on his radio show Thursday night. Callahan said he is excited to have Gilmore join the staff at Nebraska.

“Ted Gilmore comes to us after two seasons on the Colorado coaching staff,” Callahan said. “Ted is an outstanding individual in every sense. He gives us a coach who has experience in the Big 12 Conference, having coached at both Colorado and Kansas.

“He is a specialist in his area of expertise and is a perfect fit for our football program. Ted is a class act in every sense and I know our players and fans will love him.”

Gilmore joined the Colorado coaching staff in February of 2003, and tutored the Buffs’ wide receivers. In 2003, seniors D.J. Hackett and Derek McCoy combined for 141 receptions, 1,896 yards and 18 touchdowns. In 2004, Gilmore oversaw a re-tooled receiving corps that had five different wideouts catch 20 or more passes in CU’s West Coast Offense.

Before his two seasons in Boulder, Gilmore spent the previous two seasons as the wide receivers coach for Coach Joe Tiller at Purdue, where he worked on the same staff as Nebraska assistant Scott Downing. Gilmore coached the top receiving tandem in the Big Ten in 2002, when Taylor Stubblefield and John Standeford combined for 152 receptions and 2,096 yards.

Gilmore also has assistant coaching stints at Houston (2000), Kansas (1999) and his alma mater Wyoming (1997-98). He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant on Tiller’s Wyoming staff from 1994 to 1996.

Gilmore played his final two college seasons at Wyoming, lettering as a receiver in 1988 and 1989, after transferring from Butler County (Kan.) Community College. He caught 40 passes for a team-leading 594 yards and three touchdowns as a junior, and had 32 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns as a senior. He earned second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a senior. Gilmore earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wyoming in 1991.

“Coach Callahan is very well-respected in this business and after sitting down and meeting with him, I knew I would become a better coach by working on his staff,” Gilmore said. “Scott Downing is one of my mentors in the business. He recruited me to the University of Wyoming and the chance to work with Scott means the world to me. I also know Jay Norvell through mutual friends and am excited to work with him, as well as the rest of the staff. I don’t know the rest of the staff personally, but I know of them and it is an outstanding group.”

The 37-year-old Gilmore is a native of Wichita, Kan., and graduated from Wichita South High School, where he lettered in football basketball and track. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a daughter Taylor and a son T.J.

Gilmore will have a two-year contract that will pay him an annual salary of $130,000.
