Sophomore Major Culbert makes a tackle in last year's Missouri game. He returns to the Husker defense for this week's game against Iowa State.

Lincoln – Only 67 hours and two days of practice remain before the 102nd all-time meeting between Nebraska and Iowa State this Saturday in Memorial Stadium. But before NU aims for its 84th win in the series, the Huskers must first work to set a defensive lineup that has been shaken up by recent injuries.

This week, the Blackshirts look forward to the likely return of senior cornerback Zac Bowman, but must also face the possibility of replacing senior linebacker Lance Brandenburgh, whose progress is listed as day-to-day.

“We’ve moved a lot of guys around,” Head Coach Bill Callahan said after Wednesday’s practice inside Memorial Stadium. “We’ve got the versatility with Phillip (Dillard) and Bo (Ruud) to move a lot of guys in and out. (Freshman) Blake Lawrence has played a little at the position as well. We’re kind of mixing and matching those responsibilities right now.”

Defensive Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove’s unit could also benefit from the addition of sophomore Major Culbert, who has switched back to the defensive side of the ball from running back, where he has rushed for 35 yards and one touchdown this season.

“He (Major) wants to help in any way he can,” Callahan said. “His ability to go over to defense can also help us on special teams. But as Major knows and understands, he could come right back (to offense). He’s that versatile.”

The Nebraska defense is hoping to slow down an Iowa State offense that is led by four-year starting quarterback Bret Meyer. The senior has thrown for an average of 305 yards per contest against Nebraska in his career, but totaled just 262 through the air and 26 on the ground in the Huskers’ 28-14 win in Ames last October.

The Huskers will have their final full practice of the week Thursday afternoon before Friday’s walk-thru. Nebraska’s Big 12 opener against Iowa State, which kicks off at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, will not be televised, but will be available by radio on the Huskers Sports Network and worldwide on Huskers.com.
