Lincoln-The Huskers completed their third week of spring practice with a 2 1/2-hour practice inside the Hawks Championship Center on Saturday, finishing with over 40 minutes of scrimmage to end the session.

The workout was highlighted by several long plays and big hits, including an explosive touchdown run by Roy Helu. Head Coach Bo Pelini said he was satisfied with Saturday’s scrimmage.

“We got a lot done,” he said. “Both sides of the football are coming along. We have a lot of great competition. A lot of different guys are stepping up and making plays.”

One player making a case for starting time is Helu, a sophomore running back. Late in the scrimmage, Helu scored on a touchdown run of more than 50 yards that saw him bust up the middle before juking a Husker defensive back to find the outside and the endzone.

“I am seeing what I have seen all spring,” Pelini said. “I am seeing a guy who is explosive. He is a heck of a football player. I have seen that since day one this spring. It is fun to watch the guy play.”

Pelini also announced April 19’s Red-White Spring Game will feature a mixture of starters on both sides of the ball.

“We are going to split the teams equally,” he said. “We are not worrying about ones on ones or twos on twos. We are going to watch our guys play football and get better as a group. It is going to a draft-type thing how we split the teams.”

Nebraska returns to practice next Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to prepare for the sold-out spring game.
