Lincoln - The Nebraska football team wrapped up a 2 1/2 hour practice on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Grass Practice Fields outside Memorial Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskers continued preparations for their game Saturday against New Mexico State.
Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson talked after practice about the Aggies’ 3-3-5 defensive scheme, one which the Huskers don’t see very often.
“It’s different football, it’s way different,” Watson said. “It’s not even close to a four down lineman defense. It has a big impact on the game.”
The Huskers haven’t had a chance to scout New Mexico State and their defense yet this season, as the Aggies' scheduled game last week against Nicholls State was canceled because of Hurricane Gustav. The Aggies’ game in Lincoln this Saturday will be their season opener.
“You build a plan that’s well-rounded, and that’s what we try to do every week,” Watson said about attacking the Aggie defense. “You try to build a base plan based of the information you have and try to anticipate any adjustments they may be making around us.”
One of New Mexico State’s defensive strategies is confusion, giving opposing offenses multiple looks and moving players around before the ball is snapped.
“They try to confuse you, but like all things that look complicated, there’s simplicity in it,” said Watson. “That’s our job to uncover the simplicity and that’s what I think we’ve done.”
Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for 6 p.m., and can be seen on Fox Sports Net pay-per-view.
