The Nebraska football team practiced for two hours Wednesday on the Ed and Joyanne Gass grass practice fields northeast of Memorial Stadium. The Huskers are working toward their second home game with Arkansas State this weekend. One of the main focuses of the team continues to be improving its overall play and fixing inconsistencies.
"We've got a lot of things to improve," Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson said. "I want our tempo to improve in terms of our huddle tempo, getting in and out. That has to get better. Some of that is to be expected, first time out with a new quarterback especially. They did work their way through it; that would be point number one and inconsistency in all areas, number two. We just need to get consistent. Part of it is due to the players and we just have to keep coaching, it is as much us as it is them."
True freshman quarterback Cody Green saw playing time against Florida Atlantic as he completed 2-of-3 passes for 18 yards and rushed twice for 50 yards and one score. Despite his promising showing, Watson said Zac Lee will remain the leader of the offense.
"Our starter is our starter," Watson said. "He's our guy. We ride that horse and if the opportunity presents itself, we'll put (Green) in this week."
Watson also commented on the progress made by Lee and the things he is looking for Lee to improve on in practice.
"He's working on huddle tempo," Watson said. "He's got to be better there. He played a really good game; he did a really nice job and managed a great game (on Saturday). We didn't ask him to do a whole lot of stuff, but we asked him to do enough to win the football game. As the game wore on, I gave him more responsibility and he really handled it well."
The Huskers will continue to prepare for the Red Wolves with another practice Wednesday afternoon in Lincoln.
