Senior quarterback Zac Taylor delivers a pass during the Huskers 11th spring practice.

Lincoln – The Nebraska football team completed its 11th of 15 spring workouts Saturday afternoon at the Hawks Championship Center with a two-and-a-half hour practice in full pads.

By throwing in the Oklahoma drill on Friday, during which players are pitted against each other one-on-one, as well as a majority of both weekend practices dedicated to full-contact seven-on-seven drills, as the Huskers have begun to see an increase in contact as the spring has gone on.

“Today was a good practice,” Head Coach Bill Callahan said. “The last two days that we have practiced have been really physical practices. We’ve had a lot of fun the last two days, and our guys are getting better. I’m really proud of this football team and I have seen marked improvement across the board. I like the fact that we continue to run the ball, and overall we are looking good and we just need to be strong heading into next week.”

Over 700 coaches attended practice as they wrapped up the final day of the Spring Football Coaches Clinic. The group represents coaches from 16 states, including California, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

The second day of the clinic began this morning with a talk from well-known special teams coach Frank Gansz, Sr., one of three former or current NFL head coaches speaking at the clinic, and a viewing of Saturday’s scrimmage inside the Hawks Championship Center.

“It’s been a great atmosphere here with the high school coaches clinic on the practice field, watching our drills, watching our coaches, hearing our players, and watching our players perform,” Callahan said. “It’s just been a great, great atmosphere from a competitive standpoint.”

Senior tight end Matt Herian has been happy to see his first action in two years as he is returning from a junior season-ending leg injury.

“Just like any spring, I’m still a little rusty in some spots, but I’m just really excited to get back,” Herian said. “(The injuries) are just another bump in the road, and I can’t let it get me down, I’ve just got to take it in stride. I just want to play this season and that’s all I’ve asked.”
