Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team worked out for two hours in half pads at Memorial Stadium Wednesday, gearing up for its first conference contest of the season. Coach Bill Callahan was pleased with the way the Huskers responded.

"Practice went well, it was very up beat, very energized and positive, much better than it was yesterday," Callahan said. "I think that's because players came off rest (Monday). Normally that occurs when you have a little down time and then come back to the field. Their legs are a little weary and it takes a little time to get them going. I thought we came back more focused, more concentrated in terms of what we needed to get done today."

Callahan, who has guided the Huskers to a 2-1 start heading into league play, also noted that three Blackshirts returning from injury continued to make progress.

"Fabian Washington practiced, Adam Carriker practiced and Lornell McPherson practiced, they all practiced well," Callahan said. "They are making strides."

While the three Blackshirts have returned to the field, Callahn announced that NU's starting fullback in the first three games, Steve Kriewald, was injured Tuesday and will not play this weekend.

"We hate to see guys hurt in practice. We are hopeful we can get him back in the next week or so," Callahan said.

The Huskers continue preparations for Kansas on Thursday with their final full workout of the week. Nebraska and Kansas are set to kick off at 6:10 p.m. Saturday.
