NFL Hopefuls Work Out for Scouts

A dozen former Husker football players showed off their football skills and physical ability in front of NFL scouts on Thursday afternoon at the Hawks Championship Center.

Nebraska's Pro Day attracted more than 30 scouts and team personnel, representing 24 National Football League organizations. The scouts watched eight members of the 2009 senior class and four other former Huskers go through testing. Last year's group of seniors was highlighted by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, widely considered a possible No. 1 overall draft pick. Suh did not go through any of the testing, but did do defensive line position drills.

Other members of last year's senior class working out included safeties Larry Asante and Matt O'Hanlon, wide receivers Chris Brooks and Menelik Holt, defensive linemen David Harvey and Barry Turner and linebacker Phillip Dillard.

Like Suh, Asante and Dillard attended the NFL Scouting Combine, but used Thursday as another chance to impress scouts, while the other five players had their first opportunity to impress scouts in person. Former Huskers Shukree Barfield, Frantz Hardy, Marlon Lucky and Armando Murillo also showed their skills on Thursday.

The players went through a series of testing stations including the vertical jump, broad jump, 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, 3-cone drill, shuttle run and bench press. The day finished with position-specific drills.

The National Football League Draft will be held in New York City on April 22-24. The event will be held over three days for the first time, with the first round in prime time on Thursday, April 22.
