Lincoln – Sixth-ranked Nebraska took advantage of a costly eighth-inning error by Louisana-Lafayette and parlayed it into the go-ahead run, as the Huskers won the opener of Saturday’s day-night doubleheader by a score of 4-3.

With a tie score in the eighth, DJ Belfonte reached on a fielder’s error by ULL second baseman Jordan Poirrier. After Cody Neer grounded into a fielder’s choice, Ben Kline successfully executed a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with one out. Nimmo then drove home Neer with a grounder to short, as the Huskers capped their 17th come-from-behind win of the year.

Neer led the charge, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Ben Kline, Mitch Abeita and Nick Sullivan had two hits apiece for Nebraska, which improved to 35-8-1.

Zach Herr (2-2) earned the win in relief for Johnny Dorn, as he fanned three of the four hitters in faced in a perfect 1.1 innings of work. Buddy Glass (2-3) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run.

The matchup between Dorn and ULL’s Hunter Moody lived up to expectations, as both starters pitched well in no-decisions. Dorn scattered five hits and fanned 11 over 5.2 innings, while Moody allowed three runs on eight hits over 5.2 frames.

Anderson was impressed by Dorn’s performance, but the team’s execution was not as sharp as it needed to be this afternoon

“This was another great outing by Johnny Dorn. We just didn’t get the run in time to get him the win. That’s a little disappointing because we obviously wanted to help him out in that way, but I’m proud of the kids for getting the win,” I did not think we were fundamentally sound today. We made some mistakes but I thought they were mistakes of experience. Some young kids made some mistakes, it’s just one of those things. Thankfully we had some thing happen, and we ended up pushing some runs across. This was a good win for us.”

Louisiana-Lafayette (22-24) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, taking advantage of some wildness from Dorn. After a leadoff single by Brian Bowman, Dorn hit Matt Goulas and walked Chance Harst two batters later to load the bases with one out. The Husker pitcher tried to pick off Goulas at second, but the thrown deflected off of Goulas’ helmet as he slide back into second, allowing Bowman to score from third.

Harst put the Huskers in a 2-0 deficit in the fourth, as he led off the frame with his seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to left center.

Nebraska, which managed just one hit over the first 3.1 innings against Moody, struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth against the southpaw. Three straight singles by Abeita, Sullivan and Farst loaded the bases. DJ Belfonte’s ground out put the Huskers on the board before Neer ripped a two-run single to center, giving the Huskers a 3-2 advantage.

“For about six innings I thought our focus was good against one of the best pitchers around,” Anderson said. “I thought he was very, very good and kept us off balance. I thought three or four runs would win this game, so we’re fortunate we pushed some things across.”

Louisiana-Lafayette pushed across the tying run in the seventh against Dorn, as Travis Whipple singled before moving to third on a base hit by Tyler Benzel. Greg Fontenot then scored Whipple with a ground out to knot the game at 3-all, setting the stage for the Huskers’ rally in the eighth.

The two teams will wrap up the abbreviated series this evening at 6:35 p.m. Aaron Pribanic will start for the Huskers tonight.
