Lincoln, Neb. – A sophomore and a newcomer keyed the Husker White squad to a 3-2 win Wednesday, evening the annual Red/White Series at one game apiece.

Junior Andrew Brown led the White’s offense with a 3-for-3 showing, and sophomore right-hander Matt Foust threw a solid six innings of scoreless ball , fanning four and issuing one walk. Foust allowed just two hits in his first appearance of the fall, a single to freshman John Lee in the third inning and a single by junior Nick Jaros in the fourth.

“Matt Foust had outstanding command on the mound today,” Red Head Coach Andy Sawyers said. “He threw three pitches for strikes, and that really set the tone for the game. Mort had two key plays in the field, and he and Andrew Brown were very productive today at the plate.”

Offensively, the Whites exploded for eight hits of their own, four of which came in a two-run sixth inning. Sophomore Ryan Wehrle stroked a two-run single to left field, scoring Bryce Nimmo and redshirt freshman Jake Mort, who was two-for two on the afternoon after reaching base with a double. It was junior college-transfer Brown, though, who led the offensive attack for the day, producing a single, a double and a triple with a walk.

The White rally would not go unanswered, however, as the Reds, trailing 3-0 battled back in the eighth inning to put two runs on the board. Jaros and sophomore Jake Opitz came across after an error by third baseman Ryan Bohanan. Junior Luke Gorsett and senior Jeff Christy reached base later in the inning as well, but were quickly shut down to give freshman Zach Herr the save.

“The other team was swinging well all day today,” Foust said. “They put the ball in play and got lucky on a few hits to make a threat in the later innings.”

Sophomore Jared Cranston took the loss for the Red team, going 5 2/3 innings with six hits, one walk and six strikeouts. The Red/White Series concludes tomorrow with sophomore Tony Watson and redshirt freshman Tim Radmacher slated to take the mound. The series finale is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Hawks Field.
