Huntsville, Texas A trio of Husker baseball players were honored Sunday night, as Cory Burleson, Adam Bailey and Mike Nesseth were named to the Hillcrest Ford/Bearkat Baseball Classic All-Tournament team announced following the conclusion of the three-day event.
Burleson, a freshman catcher from Midland, Texas, led the Huskers with a .545 average, going 6-for-11 with four RBIs in four games. He became the first Husker freshman since 2005 to record a four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs against Sam Houston State. In his first start of the weekend, Burleson went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and scored twice in a 14-12 victory over Missouri State.
Bailey, a junior outfielder/pitcher from Scottsdale, Ariz., was chosen as the utility player, helping the Huskers with his bat and arm to a pair of wins. He hit .250 with a pair of homers and four RBIs while also picking up a save in his only pitching effort of the weekend. Bailey went 2-for-5 with a homer and a triple against Missouri State on Friday, as his two-run hit provided the Huskers with the margin of victory in a 14-12 win. Against Sam Houston State, Bailey tossed three innings of two-hit ball to collect his first save, while also belting his second homer of the tournament.
Nesseth, a sophomore pitcher from Windom, Minn., was dominant against Sam Houston State, tossing six innings of shutout baseball in NU’s 8-1 win over the Bearkats. He established a career high with 12 strikeouts and allowed three singles in matching the longest outing of his career. His 12 strikeouts topped his previous best of seven set against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 21.
The Huskers are scheduled to be in action on Tuesday afternoon, as they host South Dakota State beginning at 1:35 p.m. at Hawks Field. The game will be carried on Huskers.com and on selected IMG Husker Sports Network stations, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln.
